“Ethics in the Workplace”

Inspired by our use of the 4-Way Test at every Rotary meeting and prompted by the unethical business practices generating bankruptcies, federal indictments and convictions of business executives, and huge dollars losses for stockholders and employees of these companies, the Rotary Club of Northbrook presented its third annual “Ethics in the Workplace” program at Glenbrook North High School on Wednesday and Thursday, March 16 and 17, 2005.  Members of the club –Jim Kucienski, retired District 28 Superintendent of Schools; Michael Ciesla, attorney, Ciesla & Ciesla. P.C.; Sandy Frum – Trustee, Village of Northbrook; Ed Harvey, Executive Director, Northbrook Park District; Annette Marshall, Owner/Operator, Allegra Print & Imaging; Joel Meisel,  Insurance broker, Insurance Services, Ltd.;  Dave Masters, Senior Loan Officer, Northbrook Bank & Trust; Judge Jerry Orbach, Retired Circuit Court Judge; and Sandy Silvers, Franchise Owner/Operator, Browns Chicken – engaged students in an interactive analysis of short ethical scenarios taken from the Rotarians’ personal/business experiences.

The goals of the presentation are to have the students recognize the need for ethics in the workplace; understand what employers can do to build character in the workplace; understand how they can make a difference in this important issue; become acquainted with the skills they will need to be considered for employment in the presenters’ various careers; and to introduce the students to Rotary’s 4-Way Test.

In eight sessions over two days, over 600 Glenbrook North students participated in the workshops. At the conclusion of each session, all students received an antiqued souvenir coin showing the 4-way Test, the Rotary logo and motto, “Service Above Self.”
